Claim: Media used Titan submarine tragedy to ‘cover’ a $1,300 monthly health care credit

A July 2 Facebook post (direct link, archive link) shows a video alleging that the media used the implosion of the submersible Titan to divert people’s attention away from free health claims.

Guys, the media was using the byline to cover up the real news, says a narrator in the video. I am exposing what they are trying to hide from you. Any low-income American, even if you’re unemployed, can apply for a free $1,300 a month in health care credits. This is a government incentive that can be used to cover all bills.

The narrator goes on to say that everyone is eligible to receive the credits, and anyone trying to qualify “just can’t get Medicare or Medicaid.”

Similar versions of the Facebook health claim application used a different script or different footage.

Our assessment: False

The post attempts to link the Titan submersible deaths to an offer of health care credit, but there is no evidence of a link between the two or a “cover-up,” and the post offers no evidence for its claim. There is no such health credit. And the links in the post go to the American Medical Associations website, not a registration for any credits.

No proof of a $1,300 free health credit

The submarine Titan disappeared shortly after beginning its descent on June 18 to view the sunken wreck of the Titanic. After an extensive search, debris from the submarine was found on 22 June. When pieces of the wreck were washed ashore on June 28, officials recovered the presumed human remains of those who died aboard.

The post claims to link to information about health care claims, but the links included in the post actually redirect to an American Medical Association web page describing the Affordable Care Act. There is no mention of a free $1,300 health care credit on the page, just one button to sign up to become a member of the AMA.

In January 2021, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to expand Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to make them more accessible to Americans. But USA TODAY reported in January 2023 that that doesn’t mean Americans will get free health insurance.

USA TODAY found no mention of a $1,300 health care claim on any government site or from other reliable sources.

A health insurance market fact sheet states that uninsured Americans may be eligible for free or low-cost health insurance through Medicaid or subsidized health insurance through the market. This assistance from Marketplace can come in the form of premium tax credits that will help pay for the cost of health insurance, but those incentives vary based on income rather than being a flat figure like $1,300.

The factsheet says consumers can receive tax credits and cost rebates “depending on household income.”

USA TODAY reached out to the Facebook user who shared the post for comment but did not immediately receive a response. The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
