TikTok helped Miss Chiropractic make the 'Crack Addicts' TV show on TLC

PALM BEACH GARDENS Since the May 24 premiere of her show Crack Addicts on cable television channel TLC, Dr. Alessandra Coln, a chiropractic physician at Papa Chiropractic in Palm Beach Gardens, has, well, “adjusted” to life in the spotlight.

This is the first time anyone has pioneered a nationwide chiropractic television series, bringing alternative medicine to the fore. There is a big responsibility, he said she. On the downside, it’s so exciting.

“Do I get recognized? Yeah, all the time. I have my imposter syndrome and also I don’t want to sound like a braggart, so I try to handle my fame with a little bit of humility and keep it humble. My whole life changed after the show.

Coln, who also goes by Miss Chiropractic, never sought fame. She just landed on her lap, or rather in her mailbox. TLC discovered videos of her on TikTok and reached out to see if the energetic doctor would be interested in starring in a show.

Thinking it was spam, he deleted the message. Two weeks later, producers followed through, so she realized it was real.

Sure, I jumped at the chance, she said enthusiastically, though she admits she struggled with cameras in her face the first couple days.

TLC came up with the clever title of the series and launched extreme cases. New patients with a wide variety of challenging conditions travel to Florida to give Coln a “try” to improve their mobility and decrease their discomfort.

If I can reduce the pain of someone for 24 hours who is in pain 24/7, it’s worth it, he said. It was really, really important to us to appeal to clients who had never seen a chiropractor before because we really wanted to get those authentic reactions.

Among the episodes of “Crack Addicts”:

A 29-year-old woman had herniated discs in the neck and back and sciatica. At times she could not lift a leg and she had suffered several episodes of temporary paralysis. She entered the office with the help of a cane and she left without using it after adjusting herself.
A 47-year-old woman who wears a waist-training corset 16 hours a day to work towards breaking the Guinness World Record for smallest corseted waist (16 inches). She suffered from migraines and tightness in the jaw and neck.
A young woman diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that causes joints to dislocate and fall apart every day.
A man born with arthrogryposis, a congenital disease in which there is contraction of the joints so that the person cannot fully extend their arms, for example. He also suffers from severe dizziness and lower back pain due to the way he slouches and walks.

Coln knows all about a complete life reset. At age 14, she was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkins lymphoma cancer and she credits MD Anderson Cancer Center and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston with saving her life.

When you’ve had near-death experiences, it really puts things in perspective, she said. I feel that when people face difficulties, they have two options, allow those struggles to transform into them or overcome them. I’ve always chosen to walk past them and not allow them to define who I am.

She is a proud supporter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the official philanthropy of her Tri Delta fraternity. Coln, her mother, and her brother both ran marathons for LLS Team in Training.

Left with the residual effects of her illness, she first sought chiropractic care in her early 20s. Her positive experience inspired her to enroll at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Daytona Beach. She has been certified by the Florida Chiropractic Board since 2013.

Coln, who spent part of her childhood in Saudi Arabia due to her father’s career as a chemical engineer, is raising her 10-year-old stepdaughter and 7.5-month-old son with her husband in Palm Beach Gardens. The new mom gave her baby his first chiropractic adjustment at just seven seconds as soon as he was placed on her tummy.

The waiting list has grown to 15,000 people and she only has time to see about 50 patients a day. She is striking a balance between giving preference to her existing local clients and the friends and family they refer to with scheduling appointments with patients who have discovered her on TLC.

She’s had such a beautiful and successful career, she acknowledged. I am manifesting it. I’m working hard to do that and I’d be so privileged if it were in the cards, because that would mean shedding more light on my profession.

Coln celebrated the premiere with friends and family at the Salute Market in Palm Beach Gardens and hosted watch parties for the second and third episodes.
